Arezzo: a village and an Italian garden within a treasure chest of ancient Tuscan walls

Borgo Granducale is a project involving the transformation of the estate into a Boutique Hotel. The Borgo becomes the tangible manifestation of the dialogue between the project's various scales: the landscape and environment, the architecture, and its interiors. The new intervention aims to offer guests an authentic wellness experience by enhancing the beauty and intrinsic qualities of the Borgo and its surrounding territory.

Over the centuries, the perimeter walls have protected the integrity of the Borgo and, consequently, its gardens and orchards. The project seeks to interpret the historic buildings and their context while respecting their strong identity and presence: the garden enclosed within the walls thus becomes the guiding principle of the intervention, enhancing the overall atmosphere.

Borgo Granducale is developed according to a master plan that divides the project into three main areas, each characterized by a specific function, a distinct architectural approach, and its own green space. Nature, through the gardens, guides guests through the estate and allows the buildings to engage in a harmonious dialogue.

The first area identified by the project is connected to the historic Italianate Garden and includes the main hotel building, whose restoration will fully restore the original quality and beauty of the architecture. The second area involves the transformation of a series of buildings intended to house activities complementary to the hotel’s operations. The third area is dedicated to the Wellness Pavilion: set within a newly designed park, it will be created by introducing new architectural qualities.

The Borgo extends towards the vegetable and aromatic gardens, which provide the produce used by guests. The project is part of an ancient tradition of timeless sustainability, enriched by contemporary knowledge and technology. The intervention aims to restore and decorate the various buildings using natural and environmentally friendly materials, while promoting a conscious life cycle for the materials used in construction.
